Operated Table Without Side Covers and The Rail Bearings Fell Out

Hey guys,

Long story short, I decided to operate our 4800 without side covers to make sure it was moving across the rails right (not knowing that the side covers also serve the purpose of keeping the machine head from over-reaching). When I pressed the DATUM button, it moved in the forward Y directing until half of the first slider was hanging off the rail (it was at this point the gear ran out of teeth and it stopped). About 12 bearings fell out. After discovering that it would cost around $3000 to repair the machine, I fed all but one bearing back in, (had to clock out). My question is, if some bearing(s) are lost, do any of you know the diameter of the bearings, and where I can get them?

3000.00 to repair it?? Yikes!
If somebody doesn't know the size (I don't, I have a growth series) grab a micrometer or dial caliper and measure one. Hopefully it is a common size and Gooogle it. Even Amazon and EBay sell loose ball bearings. I bought a bag of 100 cheap to weld on for feet for napkin holders and letter holders I was cutting.

I should of updated this earlier, but I was able (God only knows), to recover all the ball bearings and feed them back into the rollers, needless to say the torch now operates fine. If there is anything I can say after that terrifying experience, it's always follow every little instruction in the manual. It may be a state-of-the-art piece of equipment, but it only takes one push of a button to jack it up bad.

3K price sounds way high to me.
I used to build machines with linear rails and bearings. Bearings ranged in price from $60-$200 each depending on type and size.
Once you have replacement sliders they aren't to hard to swap out if you needed to.
But glad you go it working!
